From Blockade to Breakthrough: The Birth of Assemblator
In 2021, the blockage of the Suez Canal by the container ship Ever Given caused major global disruptions in the supply chain. This event, right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, painfully exposed how fragile international supply chains can be. For Lennart Oosterlaar, it was a turning point: the moment to turn his vision of local, flexible assembly into reality.
In the evenings and on weekends, alongside his full-time job as a mechanical engineer in the automotive industry, Lennart began building a modular robot capable of assembling a wide range of products: quickly, scalably, and locally.
This became the foundation for the concept Assemblator: ‘Assembly as a Service’. Companies supply the components, and the Assemblator robot handles the assembly: fully automated and independent of long, overseas supply chains.
In 2023, Kunal Kerste joined to help shape and grow the business development side. Together, they attended trade shows and spoke with dozens of manufacturing companies. The feedback was clear: the market is ready for a new way of producing.
In 2025, Assemblator B.V. was officially founded. From our location in Utrecht, we are ready to welcome potential customers and to build the future of smart, local assembly together.
